Blu-ray Disc is an opticaldisc storage media format and is used like it’s predecesers (CDR and DVD) for storing data and video.
The name Blu-ray is derived from the blue laser used in the machine. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on a DVD which uses a red (650 nm) laser.
BD-R discs can be written to once, whereas BD-RE can be erased and re-recorded many times.
Theoretically the maximum speed for Blu-ray Discs is about 12× as the speed of rotation (10,000 rpm) causes too much wobble for the discs to be read properly.
