Also known as DVD-R9, this medium holds 8.5gb worth of data and can only be written on be compatible DVD-R DL recorders. These discs can be read in DVD devices although some older machines may have problems.

The disc has two layers which can be recorded on, and the machine after finishing the top layer, shines the laser through the transparent top layer too continue recording. The cost of these disks remain more expensive than the single layer discs.
