Invented by Pioneer in 1999, this format has the same capacity as DVD-R but as able to be written on more than once. The inventors state that the disc can be rewritten on up to 1000 times, and are generally considered to playable in 75% of conventional DVD players. The discs must be erased before writing on them.

These discs are not as popular as DVD-R discs as they are more expensive, but for those who wish to record data on a temporary basis, this is an ideal solution.
