Types of printable cd`s & dvd`s
September 11th, 2009Printable CD`s & DVD`s media comes in 3 different types of surface:
1. Inkjet Printable CD-R:
These CDR’s come in three options, white printable, silver printable and gold printable. This has an ink absorbent surface which is an additional coat on top of a thermal printable surface.
For the most part inkjet printable CD-R surfaces appear matte in finish. Printable CD discs come in both a standard print diameter and a hub printable CD (full face printable). This allows printing right up to the centre hub (hole) on the disc. The drying characteristic of the printable CD tends to make the printable surface off white.
Silver printable CDs special feature is its 3-D effect on the disc label. Silver inkjet tends to mute the colours down a bit but is very eye-catching with the reflection.

2. Thermal printable CD-R
These types of blanks discs come in a shiny silver and white printable surface. Some special surfaces are available in other colours (you name it) but requires special coating. This can be done as a special order.

3. Thermal Re-Transfer CDR
Thermal re-transfer printable CD media is similar to thermal printable media except it has additional coatings on the label printing surface to protect it against the heat of the CD printer. It is a specialized type of printable CD media that is made for production thermal retransfer like the Rimage Everest CD printer and the Teac P-55 dye-sublimation printer.
Thermal printable discs can not be interchanged to an inkjet printer although inkjet printable discs can be printed on with fair results. The right disc for the printer makes all the difference.
