Anything that gets in between the laser beam and the recording layer of a DVD may result in fatal errors. Scratches are among the most severe causes of write/read errors, as they prevent the laser beam from properly focussing on the recording layer. That’s because scratches diffuse the laser beam which, in turn, impairs accurate writing and reading of data marks. Coated with ScratchProof, TDK?s DVD now boasts a more than 100 times stronger resistance to scratching. Even at much higher loads and longer exposure to scratching that would be detrimental to other DVDs, TDK?s ScratchProof DVD shows no fatal increase in error rates and jitter. TDK's proprietary ScratchProof coating is not just extremely hard. It features fantastic anti-static properties, too. While a conventional DVD retains 50% of a given electro-static charge even after 900 minutes, with TDK's ScratchProof hard coat voltage is down 50% after a mere 50 minutes. At the same time, the new ScratchProof hard coat is less prone to pick up static charge. Less static charge means less attraction of dust. And less dust means a substantial plus in reliability.

Conventional DVDs are particularly prone to soiling by oily smudges such as fingerprints. Any greasy contaminants stick hard to standard disc surfaces, attracting even more dust and even hard particles.
